Choosing Basalt Stones

Basalt stones were formed millions of years ago during volcanic eruptions that took place mainly near coastal areas. Basalt stones are used in hot stone massage because they contain magnetic or titanic iron which retains heat. Most basalt stones appear grey or greenish when dry and turn black when wet. Choosing stones for warm stone massage can be confusing due to the many qualities of basalt stone that are available.

Natural basalt stone usually refers to stones that are used for landscaping purposes.  They are stones that have been smoothed by water and the passage of time.  Some of these stones will be fine for stone massage but many will need to be discarded due to rough edges, cracks or unsuitable shapes. If you purchase natural basalt stones, be sure that the stones have been hand sorted so that you do not recieve any that are unsuitable. All the natural basalt stones on our site have been hand selected so that you will not receive any that will not work for you.

At Riverrockmassage.com you can choose from natural basalt stones that have been hand selected to insure that they of the highest quality and premium basalt stones. What are "handcrafted" basalt stones? I have had a number of questions lately asking me about these stones. "Handcrafted" basalt stones are stones that have been shaped by a machine. These are generally more expensive than "natural" basalt stones because of the process involved. I generally do not recommend using these stones because part of the goal of hot stone therapy is to reconnect with the earth and earth energy. A stone that has been shaped by a machine is not the same energetically as a stone that has been shaped by nature.
