Gua Sha Tools

Gua Sha tools commonly include a bottle of oil and a tool with a rounded edge for applying pressure to oiled skin while stroking. Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese treatment used to prevent or cure ailments and is especially useful for improved blood circulation, respiratory ailments, the elimination of pain, and relief from stiffness. The application of friction ("Gua") on the surface of the skin with a tool is meant to remove blood congestion, called "Sha."

In ancient days, Gua Sha practitioners used a variety of tools with rounded edges to stroke the skin, including ceramic spoons, old coins and bones, but current-day practitioners now use jade stones. Practitioners apply oil to the skin and then use downward strokes on the skin until petechie appear. The patient may find this uncomfortable, but not painful, and the petechie will disappear in two to four days.
