How To Use Hot Stones For Massage

The use of hot stones for massage is a time-honored tradition. With universal roots in diverse ancient civilizations from Asian to Native American, people have been using hot stones for massage therapy for centuries. At River Rock Massage, we are committed to preserving the integrity of hot stone massage. Here are some tips on how to practice this sort of therapy safely and effectively.

Make sure to allow plenty of time before the massage to heat the stones so that the client does not have to wait on the table. The proper temperature is crucial! Even if the stones seem a comfortable temperature for you (the practitioner), be sure to take your client's comfort level into account. When using stones for Swedish massage, apply oil and use gentle but firm strokes along the muscle. For deep tissue work, oil might cause the stone to slip off the precise spot.

Stone size is another important factor to consider. A quality therapist should have a wide selection of rocks from which to choose and should exercise common sense when applying them. For larger areas such as the back, for instance, utilize large stones with a relatively flat surface so they remain in place.
