Massage Therapy Stones

The purchase of a diversified massage stone collection is an important investment. While rocks might seem the most durable of items, the fact is that they can easily be ruined for therapeutic uses if treated improperly. In order to avoid having to re-purchase your collection every couple of months, we at River Rock Massage recommend the following tips.

The method by which massage stones are warmed dictates their life expectancy. Practitioners should never attempt to heat their stones by placing them in an oven or microwave. Intense, dry heat leads to cracking and chipping, which will ruin your stones for use in therapy. The ideal warming method uses both gentle, moist heat. Professional stone heaters use water to warm and hydrate massage rocks. Since you can easily control the temperature of the stones, these heaters are both convenient and safe. Stone heaters will protect your valuable collection and prevent cracking.

Tips for Protecting Your Massage Therapy Stones
Since basalt ranks 6-7 on the Mohs hardness scale, these volcanic rocks are fairly resistant to scratches and nicks. A patina of tiny scratches that builds up over time is not at all detrimental to the energy of the rock or its use in therapy. However, you should place your stones carefully in the heater or into their storage space, in order to prevent chips and abrasions. Don't just toss them in!

At River Rock Massage, we believe it is possible to maintain the same therapy stone collection for life with a little care. For additional information about caring for a stone set or if you have any questions, send us an e-mail at riverrockmassage@fmtcs.com or call 319-364-7748.
